Medical offer
The Tumor & Breast Center Eastern Switzerland Chur in Graubünden is a quality-controlled tumor center certified by the Swiss Cancer Network.
Treatment options are presented and, of course, discussed and chosen together with you. The medical and nursing expertise enables most chemo- and immunotherapies to be carried out on an outpatient basis at the TBZO. Care is provided in close cooperation with your family doctor.
Investigations are often carried out in interdisciplinary collaboration, i.e. with the involvement of other specialist physicians, e.g. as part of weekly meetings at the interdisciplinary tumor board.
Nurses with experience and further training in oncology will do everything they can to ensure that you feel safe, supported and well cared for during any necessary chemotherapy. They will advise you on how to deal with the therapy and maintain your quality of life. They also take care of your psychosocial needs and are happy to arrange targeted support services. We consider good information to be important so that you or your relatives can help yourselves. Where possible and desired, we also work together with Spitex nurses.
A modern laboratory enables a differentiated examination of the blood count and a wide range of serum-chemical diagnostics for time-critical analyses. We work closely with the Viollier laboratory for special examinations.
Psychosocial care for patients and relatives is supported by a network of psychologists and medical psychotherapists.
The TBZO Chur has established collaborations with various partners. Dr. Corina Canova's specialist practice for vascular diseases (Angiology Graubünden) is located on the same floor as the TBZO Chur. Nearby is the state-of-the-art radiology institute "Radiologie Südost" with digital mammography, ultrasound, computer tomography and MRI. The radiology institute is an official partner of the cantonal early breast detection program "donna". In addition, there is cooperation with various institutes and clinics of the Graubünden Cantonal Hospital in Chur.
For radiation therapy, there is close cooperation with the radiotherapy department at the Graubünden Cantonal Hospital.
For surgical procedures or specialist interventions, we have access to proven partners in local practices or hospitals.
For holistic care, we have a network of partners from physiotherapy, nutritional counseling and other interdisciplinary services at our disposal.
Nutrition is a particularly important topic for cancer patients. Personal consultations are offered by the consultant for nutrition and dietetics, Ms. Karin von Burg, MSc clin. nutr. nutritionist SVDE, on our premises in the TBZO. You will receive information on nutrition that is tailored to your individual eating habits and disease situation. The tumor disease itself can lead to changes in the metabolism and the side effects of the therapy can lead to a premature feeling of fullness, nausea, digestive problems or loss of appetite. This often results in unwanted weight loss and an associated feeling of weakness. Even after treatment, patients and their relatives often have questions about their diet. During a consultation, the dietician can show you ways to achieve an improved quality of life through a healthy and tasty diet and also ensure that you do not restrict yourself unnecessarily.
If you would like an appointment, you are welcome to contact the medical and/or nursing team in Chur. If you have a doctor's prescription, the costs of the consultations will be covered by your basic health insurance.
Our consultation hours can be held in German, French, Italian and English.
We also offer the continuation of treatments for patients who are only staying in the region for a short time for vacation.
Registration with the TBZO can be made via the family doctor, a specialist or the patients themselves, provided they are not insured under a family doctor model.
The Tumor & Breast Center Eastern Switzerland Chur provides the oncology consultation service at Schiers Hospital (link provided). The consultation hours in Schiers take place every Tuesday and, since May 2022, every second Thursday.
Personalized cancer therapy: molecular oncology consultation and molecular tumour board (MTB) (in cooperation with the University Hospital Zurich)
From November 2019, we will be offering a molecular oncology consultation at the Tumor and Breast Center Eastern Switzerland in Chur. Our aim here is to integrate individualized treatment options into the clinical care of our patients. It is now possible to analyze genomic changes in tumour diseases at the molecular level. A broad spectrum of methods is used for diagnosis, which is carried out at the Institute of Pathology and Molecular Pathology at the University Hospital Zurich. These genetic tests are only carried out after the patient has been informed in detail and has given their written consent. In order to be able to offer our patients optimal care and to derive possible therapeutic consequences from the molecular diagnostics, we will discuss our patients at the molecular tumor board of the University Hospital Zurich.
At these conferences, a multidisciplinary team discusses the results and makes recommendations on how to proceed. The overall clinical situation of the patient in the individual case is also taken into account. Finally, we can discuss the findings, recommendations and therapeutic steps with the patient. This consultation is offered for all tumour entities, regardless of whether there is an initial diagnosis or a later line of therapy in a metastatic situation, for second opinions or also for patients for whom so-called standard therapy can no longer be offered and a personalized therapy option is sought.
We offer genetic consultations in close cooperation with the TBZO location in St.Gallen.
You can find out more about this service from Dr. med. Barbara Bolliger and Dr. med. Salome Riniker here
For the clarification of breast findings, we work together with the Radiology Institute South East (Dr. med. G. Reutter) or with the Fontana Women's Hospital in Chur.
At the patient's request, the examination can also be carried out at the certified Tumor and Breast Center of Eastern Switzerland in St. Gallen.
Let us introduce ourselves
We are there for everyone. The Tumor & Breast Center Eastern Switzerland wants to be accessible to everyone: anyone and everyone, whether they have general (= basic) or private (= supplementary) insurance, can come to us for help and support with all types of tumor or blood diseases. Our certified breast center is also open to everyone. We are committed to personal, familiar and holistic, competent care and to short clarification and treatment paths. A familiar, friendly atmosphere and uncomplicated access to specialized services, preferably "under one roof", are our special characteristics. Personal care, including that of relatives and loved ones, is important to us. Cooperation with specialists in psychology, nutritional counseling, physiotherapy and others enables us to provide holistic care. Fast, outpatient clarification and treatment are usually possible.
Our history: The Tumor and Breast Center ZeTuP was opened in 1998 in the Silberturm St.Gallen. Prof. Dr. med. Hansjörg Senn and the founding team had the vision that prevention and early detection could prevent a great deal of suffering. The Chur site was added in 2004 and the Rapperswil-Jona site in 2008. In June 2022, the Tumor and Breast Center ZeTuP merged with the Breast Center Eastern Switzerland in St. Gallen and the Vadiana Oncology Practice in St. Gallen to form the Tumor & Breast Center Eastern Switzerland with sites in Chur, Rapperswil, St. Gallen and Wattwil.

The procedure at ourTumor and Breast Center Eastern Switzerland
Registration at the Breast Center is usually done by your family doctor or gynecologist. If you have breast complaints or questions, you can also make an appointment directly with us. We treat patients of all insurance classes.
We allocate appointments according to urgency. In the case of suspicious breast changes, you will be offered an appointment for clarification within a maximum of 2 (working) days.
If you are unable to keep your appointment, please inform us as early as possible.

We can quickly clarify any changes in the breast or abnormal findings. As part of the initial consultation, we carry out a detailed discussion and a palpation and ultrasound examination of the breast. If there are any abnormal findings, a sample can be taken immediately (biopsy) using a thin needle. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia and takes around 15 minutes

In most cases, a mammogram is also necessary for a comprehensive assessment in the breast consultation. These are carried out at the Stephanshorn Clinic. We schedule these on the same day directly before or after your appointment in our consultation. A shuttle service is organized by us and guarantees a quick way to the mammography and back to us.
If required, we can organize additional examinations (e.g. MRI) for you via our colleagues in radiology.

We will inform you of the result of the biopsy as soon as possible and discuss the next steps in your individual situation with you. Very often, the changes are harmless and do not require any further treatment.
However, if you are diagnosed with breast cancer, your findings will be discussed by our team and at our interdisciplinary tumor conference. At the Breast Center, we will then explain the treatment recommendation to you and advise you in detail. We will then plan the next steps together with you.
If an operation is planned, we will discuss the procedure with you in detail. It is very important to us that, wherever possible, you are operated on by the same doctor who carried out your investigations and therefore knows you and all the necessary findings best.

We will perform your operation at the Stephanshorn Clinic. In the case of breast cancer, we will offer you an operation date within 1-2 weeks at the latest.
The Stephanshorn Clinic will send you all the necessary documents. If you are known to have any relevant concomitant illnesses, you may be invited separately for an anesthesia consultation. As a rule, however, you will be admitted to the clinic directly on the day of the operation.
You will be operated on by your attending physician from the Breast Center and then cared for during your stay in hospital. In the case of breast-conserving surgery, you can expect to stay in hospital for 1 to 3 days.
You can also find detailed information about your hospital stay directly via the Stephanshorn Clinic link:
www.hirslanden.ch/de/klinik-stephanshorn/ihr-aufenthalt/ablauf-ihres-aufenthalts.html

In the week following the operation, or at any time if required, we carry out a wound check at the Breast Center.
In the case of breast cancer, a second discussion takes place at the tumor conference after the operation. As part of the wound check, we explain the findings of the tumor operation and their significance for the further course of the disease in a personal discussion. Additional treatments are often recommended for breast cancer in order to prevent a relapse, e.g. radiotherapy of the breast or drug therapies.
