Location Rapperswil

The Rapperswil-Jona site relies on tumor boards and certifications as instruments of quality assurance for modern and guideline-based oncology. New cases are discussed at the weekly interdisciplinary tumor board. In addition, weekly case discussions with specialists from the other locations of the Tumor and Breast Center ensure that treatment concepts are developed at the highest level of quality. The Rapperswil-Jona site is certified by the German Cancer Society (DKG) as a network partner of Winterthur Cantonal Hospital.

Further certifications are available from the Stephanshorn Breast Center in the area of breast diseases (Swiss Cancer League) and from the Swiss Cancer Network (SCN). As part of certification, the quality criteria are reviewed at regular intervals in order to obtain re-certification. All of these measures ensure a high level of quality from diagnosis to treatment and aftercare, and ensure that the processes are targeted and patient-oriented.

Tumor boards and certifications as a sign of quality

The Rapperswil-Jona site was founded in 2008 as a further site of the ZeTuP tumor and breast center with headquarters in St.Gallen. Over the years, it has gained a firm place in the care of people with tumor and blood diseases in the region through modern, quality-conscious and patient-centered tumor therapy and interdisciplinary treatment concepts.

The medical director of the site, Dr. med. Matthias Egger, has a wealth of professional experience thanks to taking on management roles during his time in hospital and later years of clinical work in outpatient care in a practice in southern Germany. His team includes competent employees, some of whom have been part of the practice team for many years, who are very close to the needs of patients and relatives and always strive to put people at the center of their work.

Together with the medical colleagues at the Tumor and Breast Center Eastern Switzerland at the other locations in St.Gallen, Wattwil and Chur as well as the cooperation partners, including the Center for Radiotherapy Rüti ZRR, the Cantonal Hospital Winterthur, and specialist practices in the region such as the Abdominal Center, the necessary expertise is available in the network for the treatment of all malignant diseases.

A particular focus of the Rapperswil-Jona site's activities is the diagnosis and treatment of breast diseases. There is close cooperation with the breast disease specialists at the St. Gallen site, who offer a weekly consultation in Rapperswil-Jona, including the necessary investigations for women with breast diseases. Operations are carried out by nationally recognized specialists at the certified Stephanshorn Breast Centre, which is under our medical direction, with follow-up treatment and aftercare taking place close to home in Rapperswil-Jona.

Short distances thanks to a regional network

Together with the medical colleagues at the Tumor and Breast Center Eastern Switzerland at the other locations in St.Gallen, Wattwil and Chur as well as the cooperation partners, including the Center for Radiotherapy Rüti ZRR, the Cantonal Hospital Winterthur, and specialist practices in the region such as the Abdominal Center or the Uroclinic, the necessary expertise is available in the network for the treatment of all malignant diseases.

Stefan Weindel, a plastic surgeon, also works at the site and can be consulted at any time if questions arise. Services such as nutritional advice (in the clinic's own practice) and contacts to palliative care facilities and psycho-oncological therapists round off the network's services, which, thanks to its regionality, saves patients having to travel long distances.

The procedure at our tumor and breast center

Registration at the Breast Center is usually done by your family doctor or gynecologist. If you have breast complaints or questions, you can also make an appointment directly with us. We treat patients of all insurance classes.

We allocate appointments according to urgency. In the case of suspicious breast changes, you will be offered an appointment for clarification within a maximum of 2 (working) days.

If you are unable to keep your appointment, please inform us as early as possible.

We can quickly clarify any changes in the breast or abnormal findings. As part of the initial consultation, we carry out a detailed discussion and a palpation and ultrasound examination of the breast. If there are any abnormal findings, a sample can be taken immediately (biopsy) using a thin needle. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia and takes around 15 minutes

In most cases, a mammogram is also necessary for a comprehensive assessment in the breast consultation. These are carried out at the Stephanshorn Clinic. We schedule these on the same day directly before or after your appointment in our consultation. A shuttle service is organized by us and guarantees a quick way to the mammography and back to us.

If required, we can organize additional examinations (e.g. MRI) for you via our colleagues in radiology.

We will inform you of the result of the biopsy as soon as possible and discuss the next steps in your individual situation with you. Very often, the changes are harmless and do not require any further treatment.

However, if you are diagnosed with breast cancer, your findings will be discussed by our team and at our interdisciplinary tumor conference. At the Breast Center, we will then explain the treatment recommendation to you and advise you in detail. We will then plan the next steps together with you.

If an operation is planned, we will discuss the procedure with you in detail. It is very important to us that, wherever possible, you are operated on by the same doctor who carried out your investigations and therefore knows you and all the necessary findings best.

We will perform your operation at the Stephanshorn Clinic. In the case of breast cancer, we will offer you an operation date within 1-2 weeks at the latest.

The Stephanshorn Clinic will send you all the necessary documents. If you are known to have any relevant concomitant illnesses, you may be invited separately for an anesthesia consultation. As a rule, however, you will be admitted to the clinic directly on the day of the operation.

You will be operated on by your attending physician from the Breast Center and then cared for during your stay in hospital. In the case of breast-conserving surgery, you can expect to stay in hospital for 1 to 3 days.

You can also find detailed information about your hospital stay directly via the Stephanshorn Clinic link:
www.hirslanden.ch/de/klinik-stephanshorn/ihr-aufenthalt/ablauf-ihres-aufenthalts.html

In the week following the operation, or at any time if required, we carry out a wound check at the Breast Center.

In the case of breast cancer, a second discussion takes place at the tumor conference after the operation. As part of the wound check, we explain the findings of the tumor operation and their significance for the further course of the disease in a personal discussion. Additional treatments are often recommended for breast cancer in order to prevent a relapse, e.g. radiotherapy of the breast or drug therapies.
