Medical Services
The Tumor- & BrustZentrum Ostschweiz Sargans is a tumor center certified by the Swiss Cancer Network and subject to quality control.
We will explain the treatment options to you and, of course, discuss and choose them together with you. The medical and nursing expertise at TBZO enables most chemo and immunotherapies to be carried out on an outpatient basis. Care is provided in close collaboration with your family doctor.
The assessments are often carried out in interdisciplinary collaboration, meaning with the involvement of other specialist doctors, e.g. as part of weekly discussions at the interdisciplinary tumor board.
Experienced and specially trained oncology nurses do everything they can to ensure that you feel safe, supported and well cared for during any chemotherapy you may need. They will advise you on how to manage your treatment and maintain your quality of life. They also take care of your psychosocial needs and will be happy to arrange specific support services. We believe that good information is important so that you or your relatives can help yourselves. As far as possible and desired, we also work with nurses from Spitex (home care).
A modern laboratory enables differentiated blood count analysis and a wide range of serum chemistry diagnostics for time-critical analyses. For special tests, we work closely with the Risch laboratory.
Psychosocial care for patients and their families is supported by a network of psychologists and medical psychotherapists. We offer additional services for cancer survivorship (Ms. Suzanne Attoun, Cancer League SG) and fatigue consultations (PD Dr. Florian Strassser, HOCH).
We want to offer you holistic and professional treatment near your place of residence.
In order to provide you with expert treatment, advice, and support, we work closely with the TBZO network, KSGR, HOCH, Schiers, and regional specialists.
For surgical procedures or specialist interventions, we have proven partners in local practices or hospitals at our disposal.
For holistic care, we have a network of partners from physiotherapy, nutritional counseling and other interdisciplinary services at our disposal.
Nutrition issues are particularly important for cancer patients. Personal consultations are offered by nutrition and dietetics consultant Gabriela Ziörjen, BSc Nutritionist BFH SVDE (Nordstern). She will provide you with information on nutrition tailored to your individual eating habits and medical condition. The tumor disease itself can lead to changes in metabolism, and the side effects of therapy can cause premature satiety, nausea, digestive problems, or loss of appetite. This often results in unwanted weight loss and a feeling of weakness. Even after therapy, patients and their families often have questions about nutrition. During a consultation, the nutritionist can show you ways to improve your quality of life through a healthy and tasty diet and also ensure that you do not restrict yourself unnecessarily.
If you would like to make an appointment, please contact the medical and/or nursing team in Sargans. If you have a doctor's prescription, the costs of the consultations will be covered by your basic health insurance.
Our consultations can be conducted in German, French, Italian and English.
We also offer continuation of treatment for patients who are only staying in the region for a short holiday.
Registration at the TBZO can be done through the family doctor, a specialist or even through the patients themselves, provided they are not insured in a family doctor model.
The Tumor and Breast Center of Eastern Switzerland in Sargans provides oncology consultation services at the hospital in Schiers. Consultations in Schiers take place every Tuesday and every other Thursday.
Personalized cancer therapy: Molecular oncology consultation and Molecular Tumor Board (MTB) (in cooperation with the University Hospital Zurich)
We offer molecular oncology consultations at the Tumor and Breast Center of Eastern Switzerland in Sargans. Our goal is to integrate individualized treatment options into the clinical care of our patients. It is now possible to analyze genomic changes in tumor diseases at the molecular level. Diagnostics make use of a wide range of methods, which are carried out at the Institute of Pathology and Molecular Pathology at the University Hospital of Zurich. These genetic tests are only performed after the patient has been thoroughly informed and has given their written consent. In order to offer our patients optimal care and to derive possible therapeutic consequences from molecular diagnostics, we will discuss our patients at the molecular tumor board of the University Hospital of Zurich.
In these conferences, a multidisciplinary team discusses the results and makes recommendations for further action. The patient's overall clinical situation is also taken into account. Finally, we can discuss the findings, recommendations and therapeutic steps with the patient. This consultation is offered for all tumor entities, regardless of whether there is an initial diagnosis or a later line of therapy in a metastatic situation, for second opinions or also for patients for whom no so-called standard therapy can be offered and a personalized therapy option is being sought.
We offer genetic counseling directly at our location in Sargans (Dr. Stefan Greuter).
We work with Grabs Hospital (HOCH) or Fontana Women's Hospital in Chur (KSGR) to investigate breast findings.
At the patient's request, the investigation can also be carried out at the certified Tumor and Breast Center of Eastern Switzerland in St. Gallen.
Let us introduce ourselves
We are here for everyone. The Tumor- & BrustZentrum Ostschweiz aims to be accessible to all: everyone, regardless of whether they have basic or private insurance, can find help and support with all types of tumor or blood disorders. Our certified breast center is also accessible to all. We are committed to providing personal, familiar, holistic, and competent care, as well as short diagnostic and treatment pathways. A familiar, friendly atmosphere and easy access to specialized services, ideally all "under one roof," are our distinguishing features. Personal support, including for relatives and close friends, is important to us. Cooperation with experts in psychology, nutritional counseling, physiotherapy, and other fields enables holistic care. Rapid outpatient diagnostic procedures and treatments are usually possible.
Our history: The ZeTuP Tumor and Breast Center was founded in the Silberturm in St. Gallen in 1998. Prof. Dr. med. Hansjörg Senn and the founding team had the vision that prevention and early detection could prevent a lot of suffering. In 2004, the Chur location was added, and in 2008, the Rapperswil-Jona location. In June 2022, the ZeTuP Tumor and Breast Center merged with the Breast Center Ostschweiz in St. Gallen and the Vadiana Oncology Practice in St. Gallen to form the Tumor & Breast Center Ostschweiz with locations in Chur, Rapperswil, St. Gallen and Wattwil. Through the merger with rundum Sargans at the beginning of 2025, a new location has been added, while at the same time the premises in Chur were closed.

The process at ourTumor- und BrustZentrum Ostschweiz (Tumor and Breast Center Eastern Switzerland)
Registration at the Breast Center is usually done by your family doctor or gynecologist. If you have breast problems or questions, you are also welcome to make an appointment with us directly. We treat patients of all insurance classes.
We schedule appointments according to urgency. If you have suspicious breast changes, you will be offered an appointment for clarification within a maximum of 2 (working) days.
If you are unable to attend your appointment, please inform us as soon as possible.

We can quickly clarify changes in the breast or conspicuous findings. As part of the initial consultation, in addition to a detailed discussion, we carry out a palpation and ultrasound examination of the breast. In the case of conspicuous findings, a sample (biopsy) can be taken immediately with a thin needle. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia and takes around 15 minutes.

In most cases, a mammogram is also necessary for a comprehensive assessment during the breast consultation. These are carried out at the Klinik Stephanshorn. We schedule these directly before or after your appointment in our consultation. A shuttle service is organized by us and ensures a quick way to the mammography and back to us.
If necessary, we can organize additional examinations (e.g. MRI) for you through our radiology colleagues.

We will inform you of the result of the biopsy as soon as possible and discuss with you the further procedure in your individual situation. In many cases, the changes are harmless and do not require any further therapy.
However, if you are diagnosed with breast cancer, your findings will be discussed in our team and at our interdisciplinary tumor conference. At the Breast Center, we will then explain the therapy recommendation to you and advise you on this in detail. We then plan the further steps together with you.
If an operation is planned, we will discuss the procedure with you in detail. We attach great importance to ensuring that, whenever possible, you are operated on by the same doctor who carried out the examinations and therefore knows you and all the necessary findings best.

We carry out your operation at the Klinik Stephanshorn. In the case of breast cancer, we can offer you an operation date within 1–2 weeks at the latest.
You will receive all the necessary documents from the Klinik Stephanshorn. If you have any relevant pre-existing conditions, you may be invited separately for an anesthesia consultation. As a rule, however, you will be admitted to the clinic directly on the day of the operation.
You will be operated on by your attending physician from the Breast Center and subsequently cared for during your hospital stay. In the case of breast-conserving surgery, you can expect a hospital stay of 1 to 3 days.
Detailed information about your hospital stay can also be found directly via the Klinik Stephanshorn link:
www.hirslanden.ch/de/klinik-stephanshorn/ihr-aufenthalt/ablauf-ihres-aufenthalts.html

In the week after the operation, or at any time if needed, we will carry out a wound check in the Breast Center.
In the case of breast cancer, a second discussion will take place at the tumor conference after the operation. As part of the wound check, we will explain the findings of the tumor operation and their significance for the further course of treatment in a personal consultation. Additional treatments are often recommended for breast cancer to prevent a recurrence, such as radiation therapy to the breast or drug therapies.
