Information for Referring Physicians
In our senology consultation, patients with breast problems are examined. Both benign and malignant changes can be referred – an ultrasound-guided biopsy is possible immediately. Our specialists decide during the referral process whether further examinations are necessary. Whenever possible, radiological examinations such as mammography, CT, and MRI are optimally coordinated for the patient on the same day. These examinations take place at the Klinik Stephanshorn in St.Gallen – a free shuttle service is available for patients, as well as free parking in our underground garage.
Our specialists in medical oncology perform all systemic therapies (chemotherapy, endocrine therapy, immunotherapy, experimental therapies) for all solid tumors. For hematological diseases, all therapies that can be performed on an outpatient basis are offered.
Tumor aftercare can be carried out together with you as the referring physician or, if desired, delegated to us.
If you have any questions about cancer prevention, family cancer risk, and the recommendations of professional societies, you can consult us at any time.
Follow-up care after cancer is becoming increasingly individual – it depends on the type of surgery, the tumor biology, and the risk of recurrence. We are happy to recommend a personalized follow-up plan or carry out the follow-up care together with the referring physicians.
Our specialists offer all specialized cancer-specific genetic counseling. For many years, we have been advising patients with an increased genetic risk, performing genetic tests, and then recommending appropriate preventive measures and, if necessary, prophylactic therapies. At the breast center of the Klinik Stephanshorn, we work with specialists in medical genetics. We are accredited by the SAKK as a center for genetic counseling.
Various procedures can be performed on an outpatient basis in our facilities or at the Klinik Stephanshorn in St. Gallen: FNAs, core biopsies, small excisions, and port-a-cath implantations, as well as drainage of wounds, ascites, or pleural effusions.
NEW: We now offer ultrasound-guided vacuum biopsy with the Mammotome Revolve. This allows for larger biopsies, but especially for outpatient removal of, for example, fibroadenomas. This option, without general anesthesia and with minimal scarring, is increasingly requested by patients.

We organize inpatient stays for breast surgeries at the Klinik Stephanshorn in St. Gallen. All of our specialists are core team members of the certified breast center and independently perform inpatient treatments such as breast cancer surgeries there. Through close collaboration with all specialists (plastic surgery, pathology, radiation oncology, breast care nurse, etc.), we ensure optimal treatment processes and quality. As a referring physician, you are welcome to assist in the operations and accompany your patients if desired – please indicate this on the referral form.
Patients gain access to the latest treatment options, including clinical trials. As a SAKK center, we offer several clinical trials to reduce surgical morbidity or for new systemic therapies. You can find more information on this topic under Research.
Our specialized oncology nurses and breast cancer nurses offer consultations on topics such as side effects, cosmetics, wigs, etc.
Unfortunately, in some operations, the nipple and areola (mamilla) have to be removed. Later, these can either be reconstructed using plastic surgery or visually restored with medical pigmentation (3D tattoo). At TBZO, we work with a very experienced, professional tattoo artist who has completed special training in medical tattooing and has 30 years of experience. You are welcome to arrange a consultation with us to discuss the options. If the tattoo is performed in our breast center, the health insurance companies usually cover part of the costs.
